Every day, we help clients articulate their wishes and dreams and, through a Financial Life Planning process, chart a path to achieving those goals while minimizing risks. Financial Life Planning is about creating a framework within which financial choices can be evaluated. Each client’s framework is unique, incorporating goals, dreams, and risks as well as money personalities, values, and legacy wishes. We often help clients evaluate the tradeoffs of working another year versus traveling more in retirement, versus risking the exhaustion of their assets before age 100. These are not simple or one time decisions. They require deep discussions with ongoing monitoring and re-evaluation.
Our Fiduciary Oath
At Armor, we are Fiduciary Fanatics! We are our client’s trusted guide and always put our clients’ best interests first. We sell no products and act as advocates in a fiduciary capacity for our clients. We strive to be proactive, forward-looking, as well as client and solution oriented. We have built our business model to reduce conflicts of interest, always putting ourselves on the same side of the table as our clients. It is our belief that acting in our client’s best interest is core to all advice that we give. As such, we commit ourselves to this Fiduciary Oath:
- We will always put the clients’ best interests first, ahead of our own and those of our firm and its employees. We will act as a fiduciary.
- We will act with prudence; that is, with the skill, care, diligence, and good judgment of a professional. When selecting investments, we will act as the client’s agent, seeking the best investment at the best prices at all times.
- While neither we nor anyone can promise superior investment returns, we will provide impartial advice.
- We will not mislead clients. We will provide full and fair disclosure of all important facts, including our compensation from all sources, as well as fees we pay to others on your behalf.
- We will avoid conflicts of interest. We will fully disclose and fairly manage in the client’s favor, unavoidable conflicts.
Working with Armor means working with a team. Our clients are served by a team of planners and consultants with diverse strengths and specialties. Together, our team brings passion, talent, and accessibility to our clients. It is our goal to provide guidance as trusted stewards to individuals and families for multiple generations. Jeffrey R. Miller
Jeff Miller, CFA® is a partner and our Chief Investment Officer. He chairs our investment committee and oversees the daily management of most accounts. Jeff is a lifelong learner; he absorbs numerous publications and uses that knowledge to create custom portfolios that meet the unique needs of each of our clients. Jeff also authors a quarterly investment review in our newsletter that curates three months of news into an entertaining overview.
Jeff earned a B.A. in Economics from the University of Virginia in 1977, an MBA in Finance from the College of William and Mary in 1982, and has been a CFA® charterholder since 1992.
Prior to joining Armor in 2007, Jeff was a partner and Chief Investment Officer at Atlantic Capital Management, LLC where he managed $80Million. Before managing money for individuals and families, Jeff managed money in the corporate world. He served GlaxoSmithKline plc in a number of Finance and Treasury roles, including responsibility for the U.S. corporate pension plan, 401(k) savings plan, and NC GSK Foundation. Prior to GlaxoSmithKline, Jeff worked at RJR Nabisco, Inc. including service as Investment Manager with RJR Investment Management, with responsibility for over $4.0 billion in various pension, savings, and foundation portfolios.
Jeff’s previous roles have given him broad experience across all asset classes, from the nuts and bolts of portfolio management to strategic planning.
John V. Purrington
John Purrington, CFP® is a partner and serves as our CEO and Chief Compliance Officer. In addition to overseeing operations, compliance, and technology, John spends the majority of his time helping clients with financial planning.
John is passionate about making a difference in the lives of our clients through the process of financial planning. As the father of three teenagers, John has a particular interest in helping clients prepare for inter-generational wealth transfers and in helping prepare the next generation to be good stewards of that wealth.
John’s career started in 1990 at Schwab Performance Technologies, a three person startup that grew into an industry leader delivering portfolio management and accounting solutions to more than 3,000 independent financial advisors. John held many roles at Schwab Performance Technologies including overseeing the customer support group, managing the quality assurance team, and consulting for some of the most respected advisory firms in the country. The experience of growing with a tech startup gives John unique insights into planning challenges of business owners.
A graduate of Woodberry Forest School, John received his undergraduate degree in Economics from Bucknell University. John received an Executive Certificate in Certified Financial Planning from Duke University’s Continuing Studies program and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional.
John is very involved in the community. For six years, he served on the board of Saint Saviour’s Center, a community outreach ministry which includes Wake County’s first and largest diaper bank. John was recognized with an Honorable Mention for the Community Service Award in the 2015 Invest in Others Community Leadership Awards (http://www.investinothers.org/). John also serves on the investment committee at Christ Episcopal Church.
Walter L. Sheffield
Walt Sheffield, CFP®, is a partner of the firm and is focused on advising clients who are preparing for retirement and those who are already retired. He is committed to helping clients work through the anxieties as well as the financial challenges of retiring, something that he has done for many people.
Walt is passionate about helping clients prepare for the possibility that they or their spouse will live beyond their own physical or mental capacities. He is also dedicated to helping clients with their legacy planning and the challenges of inter-generational transfers. Walt tackles issues that most would prefer to avoid.
Walt has over 30 years of financial services experience. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional, as well as a practicing attorney with The Law Offices of Walter L. Sheffield III, PLLC , where he also focuses on family wealth preservation, incapacity planning, and legacy planning.
Walt’s investment experience has included six years as a trust officer for a large national bank, nine years as an employee benefits consultant with an international consulting firm, and six years as a partner in an independent investment advisory firm, Atlantic Capital Management, LLC. He founded Armor Investment Advisors, LLC in 2005.
In 2006, Walt served as chair of the Elder Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association. Currently, he is a member of the Investment Committee and the Estate Planning Section of the NCBA. Walt is a graduate of Duke University and Vanderbilt University School of Law.
Matthew C. Miller
Matt Miller, CFP® joined Armor in early 2013 and spent 18 months learning the company’s operations from the ground up before moving into an expanded role. Matt is a Financial Planning Analyst and is also our Director of Client Experience.
In his dual role, Matt works on financial plans for clients and oversees our service team.
From 2010 through 2012 Matt worked for Schwab Performance Technologies in various advisor support and relationship roles where he became an expert with many of the software tools that we use every day and worked with Independent RIA firms around the country.
Prior to working at Schwab he spent two years as a proprietary equities trader for Schonfeld Securities where he focused on short term, event driven investments. Matt graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Economics in 2007.
In 2010, Matt received an Executive Certificate in Certified Financial Planning from Duke University’s Continuing Studies program. In 2014, Matt passed the rigorous Certified Financial Planner exam and is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional.
